Chinese Characters and Calligraphy

Audience: Students and the General Public

Chinese—one of the few pictographic languages in the world—is often perceived as challenging by Western learners. In this workshop, participants explore how Chinese characters work, learn to write 10–15 basic words, and experience the art of ancient calligraphy. Phoebe demonstrates how to hold and use a traditional brush, guiding participants in creating their own written work.

Each attendee crafts a personalized card featuring a Chinese word of their choice to take home.

Supplies Needed: Pens or pencils, 1–2 sheets of paper per participant, and blank white cards
